Consultation on options for implementing the Batteries Directive

The Department for Business Enterprise & Regulatory Reform has launched a consultation seeking views on the proposed options for the implementation of the Batteries Directive which covers portable, industrial and automotive batteries and accumulators. Of these, DEFRA is responsible for implementing the provisions on portable batteries

DEFRA is consulting on a number of issues, most significantly:

  • The most effective and efficient way for producers to discharge their obligations under the Directive.
  • The most efficient method for collection of portable batteries through the setting up of an accessible and cost effective structure.

  • How to ensure that obligations on producers are proportionate to the size of the business and their share of the market.
  • Interim collection targets.

    The consultation will close on Thursday, 13 March 2008.
