Managing People Effectively: Develop Your Management Six Pack

In the first of four articles, Jeff Colligan (JPD Training’s Management Expert) discusses the pressures of management and some of the core skills for success.

Most people would agree that to be a successful manager is no mean task. How many of us actually feel as though we make a difference? Do we just go through the motions?

As a management consultant I work with all types of people (senior execs, supervisors, shop floor, etc) and they all agree – some people have it (1%) and others (99%) have to learn it!

It is said that to be a successful manager you have to be ‘all things to all people,’ you have to ‘keep all the balls in the air’ or ‘it’s impossible to get the job done and keep people happy‘. Little wonder stress levels are soaring!

Managers have to be able to organise and plan projects, keep to a budget, run meetings, write reports, keep up with technology, make presentations, and probably most importantly – manage people effectively.

This can be one of the most difficult thing to do. Getting the best out of people, to be able to inspire, to motivate and to build groups of people to work as a team is surely management’s no 1 priority. There are several reasons why certain managers find it difficult to manage people, and the main one is they have not had a lot of management development training. We take the best technician on a Friday and promote him/her to become a manager and then on a Monday we expect them to perform. You might recognise this in yourself or your organisation.

JPD Training are well aware of this and had been successfully running a Management Six Pack Programme for many years. This programme specifically addresses the need of new managers, managers who have had little management training, and/or those who require a refresher. The main topics covered include:

Management Six Pack
1. Leadership
2. Communicating Effectively
3. Performance Motivation
4. Successful Teamworking
5. Working with Difficult People
6. Personal Power & Effectiveness

The programme is dynamic and means that there is ample opportunity for all delegates to get involved and ‘have a go’ at some of the managing people skills. The environment is friendly, relaxed yet professional and each delegate will receive performance feedback from the tutor if they request it.
