Management Q & A

Over the coming months Jeff Colligan will pose questions from the Management Six Pack programme and give a suggested answer. Your comments or questions are most welcome, please email them to intouch@jpd.co.uk
Jeff Colligan has been working with and developing managers since the mid 80s. He specialises in organisational change and has helped many organisations achieve award-winning results. His workshops are lively and are based on the fundamentals of best practice management i.e. involving delegates and addressing areas for improvement.
Q1: As a leader, how do you inspire people to achieve even greater levels of performance?
A1: Listen to what your people are telling you; listening is a powerful motivator. Try to understand the emotional factors that are involved; emotions drive behaviours. Discuss SMART objectives and give praise where praise is due. Give feedback if performance is below par; do this sparingly as behavioural feedback can have a dramatic effect on performance. Use delegation and coaching techniques to empower people.
